Ilhas Studio — Hugo Veiga: Folha em Branco
Book design for Folha em Branco (Blank Sheet), a publication dedicated to the Portuguese publicist and advertising executive Hugo Veiga.
Folha em Branco is a project by Clube da Criatividade Portugal (Portugal Creativity Club) which, every year, pays tribute to a Portuguese personality linked to the creative world, in the form of a book. Drawing on the different areas that influenced Hugo Veiga over the years – family, athletics, theatre, television, marketing, animation, writing, music, advertising and life itself, the book’s design sought to convey the movement and restlessness so present in his thinking and creative process.
The entire design of the book followed the idea of elasticity and multiplicity. This gesture is immediately visible in the treatment of the typography, which is stretched, breaking rules and creating shapes that are sometimes on the edge of readability.
In keeping with the Clube da Criatividade’s briefing, a small notebook is found on the back cover that embraces the book, enveloping the ideas to come from Veiga’s kaleidoscopic world.
The image archive used in the book comes from various sources: it is Hugo Veiga's personal archive, but also includes images from family members, friends, professional partners and clients. This panoply of images was used not in a restrictive manner, but rather in a multiplicative way.
The images are repeated countless times, occupying entire spreads or creating elliptical and circular shapes in an infinite sensation.
Surprise is a fundamental element in Hugo Veiga's work. We wanted the book to reflect this idea of surprise: when the pages are pressed to the side, we see a set of images inside the book. When we press to the right, one image appears; when we press to the left, another appears. These details are part of a book that is full of layers and praise for divergent thinking.
